Set tax rates for your country

Created: Updated: Estimated time: 5 min

The Tax rates tab of the settings screen sets the country, tax rates and rounding. You can choose Japan, six ASEAN countries or the United States. Statutory rates come from PRING's table and are read-only; you can type only a few, such as the US state sales tax rate. After you press Save, the app sets you create next use the saved default tax rate, tax amount label and rounding.

Steps

  1. 1. Open the Tax rates tab

In kintone, open the app settings, then Plugins, then Settings of PRING. Select the Tax rates tab, next to the Templates tab. If nothing has been saved yet, the top of the tab says "This is the default chosen from your contract's country. Once saved, it becomes the initial tax rate of app sets."

  2. 2. Choose the country

In Country, choose Japan (JP), Thailand (TH), Singapore (SG), Malaysia (MY), Indonesia (ID), the Philippines (PH), Vietnam (VN) or the United States (US). If nothing has been saved, your contract's country is selected for you; if the contract's country is not known, it is Japan. Once you have saved, the saved country is selected. Tax name is set by the country and cannot be changed.

  3. 3. Check the tax rates

The rate fields change with the country. Statutory rates are read-only and show the value in PRING's table. Type a number from 0 to 100 only in the fields that can be edited; the table below shows which ones. If a field has an "i" mark beside it, it shows a note.

  4. 4. Choose the country-specific fields

Some countries show one more field. Japan shows Rounding: Round down (standard), Round to nearest or Round up. Thailand shows Withholding tax: No deduction, 1%, 2%, 3% or 5%. The United States shows State; type the state there (the example in the field is CA). The other countries do not have this field.

  5. 5. Press Save

Press Save. The tab shows "Saved. It is now the initial tax rate when you create an app set." If a rate is not a number from 0 to 100, the tab shows "Enter each rate as a number from 0 to 100" and nothing is saved.

  6. 6. Create the business app sets

After saving, create your business app sets on the Document links tab of the same settings screen. They start with the settings you saved. To put the screen back to the country's standard, press Reset to the country default, then press Save again.

Fields for each country

These are the values in PRING’s table on 28 October 2026. They are a list of standard and reduced rates, not tax advice.

Country Tax name on the screen Tax amount label in the apps (Japanese) Rate fields Country-specific field
Japan (JP) Consumption tax 消費税 Standard rate 10%, Reduced rate 8% (both read-only) Rounding: Round down (standard), Round to nearest, Round up
Thailand (TH) VAT 付加価値税 (VAT) Standard rate 7% (read-only) Withholding tax: No deduction, 1%, 2%, 3%, 5%
Singapore (SG) GST GST (物品サービス税) Standard rate 9% (read-only) None
Malaysia (MY) SST SST (売上・サービス税) Services 6%, Sales 10% (both can be typed) None
Indonesia (ID) VAT (PPN) PPN (付加価値税) Standard rate 12% (can be typed) None
Philippines (PH) VAT VAT (付加価値税) Standard rate 12% (read-only) None
Vietnam (VN) VAT VAT (付加価値税) Standard rate 10% (read-only), Reduced rate 8% (can be typed) None
United States (US) Sales tax 売上税 State sales tax rate 0% (can be typed; it differs by state and county) State
  • The “i” mark beside a rate shows a note. For example, in Malaysia some items are taxed at 8% or 5%, and in Indonesia the effective rate is 11% for most taxable items.
  • A short note about its use is added beside each withholding tax rate.
  • Outside Japan, the Rounding field is not shown.

What changes when you save

The saved settings are used by the business app sets you create afterwards. What changes are the fields that calculate the tax rate and the tax amount. They are in the Purchase order of the Purchasing set, and in the sales quotation, delivery note and sales invoice of the Sales set.

Item What is applied
Default of the tax rate The value of the first rate field on the tab. It is the standard rate for Japan, Services for Malaysia and the state sales tax rate for the United States
Tax amount label The country’s tax name, in Japanese. For example 消費税 for Japan and GST (物品サービス税) for Singapore
Tax amount calculation The rounding (the one you chose for Japan, rounding to the nearest for the other countries) and the number of decimals (0 for Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam, 2 for the others)

The delivery note and the invoice of the Purchasing set are apps where you type the numbers from your supplier’s document. Only the label of their tax amount field becomes the country’s tax name.

The names of the fields in the apps are created in Japanese whatever language the screen is in, so the tax amount label is the Japanese name too.

If nothing has been saved, the apps use the Japan settings as before: a tax rate of 10%, rounding down and no decimals.

Frequently asked questions

How is the country that is selected first decided?

If nothing has been saved, it is your contract's country; if that is not known, it is Japan. After you save once, the saved country is selected from then on.

Why can't I change a statutory tax rate on the screen?

A statutory rate is a read-only field that shows the value in PRING's table. The tab reads the table every time it opens, so when the table is updated for a change in the law, the rate on the screen changes too. You can type only a few rates, as the table below shows.

What happens if I do not save?

Business app sets are created with the Japan settings as before: a tax rate of 10%, rounding down and no decimals. Even when your contract's country is not Japan, the app sets do not use your contract's country unless you save.

Does saving change apps I have already created?

No. Saving changes only the business app sets you create after it.

What does Reset to the country default do?

It puts the rates on the screen, and the Japan rounding, back to the country's standard. Withholding tax goes back to No deduction and State becomes empty. The saved settings do not change until you press Save.

I cannot choose the rounding in a country other than Japan.

Only Japan lets you choose the rounding. The field is not shown for the other countries. The tax amount in the apps that are created is rounded to the nearest.

The tab says "Could not load the tax table".

The tab reads PRING's tax table when it opens. Check that your network works, then press Retry on the tab. If it still does not load, contact support.

Does the same tax rate appear in the settings screen of my other apps?

No. kintone saves plugin settings for each app. Create the business app sets from the Document links tab of the same settings screen where you saved the tax rate.
